IDentifyIt Species: A Practical Identification Guide for Endangered Species

The IDentifyIt Species Tool is a practical, easy-to-use identification guide that serves as an elimination key for customs officials, law enforcement officers, border police, and Environmental Management Inspectors (EMIs). Developed by LucidMobile, this free mobile app aims to assist in the identification of South African TOPS and CITES-listed species, facilitating better regulation and monitoring of the local and international trade of these threatened and endangered animals and plants.

Using a series of interactive steps, accompanied by photographs and easily observable features, the IDentifyIt Species Tool guides users through the identification process. The app also provides fact sheets with essential information, including conservation status, identifying features, geographic location, and similar-looking species.

Currently, the IDentifyIt Species Tool includes 140 CITES-listed South African plant and animal species, along with their look-alike species and traded parts and derivatives. The developers have plans to expand the app in the future, adding over 300 additional species, including amphibians, birds, fish, invertebrates, mammals, and reptiles.

In addition to the IDentifyIt Species Tool, LucidMobile has also developed the IDentifyIt Cycads Tool, specifically designed for the identification of South African Encephalartos Species.

The IDentifyIt Species Tool project is a collaboration between the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and TRAFFIC, the Wildlife Trade Monitoring Network. Sponsored by NORAD, SANBI, and the Mazda Wildlife Fund, this app is a valuable resource for professionals involved in species identification and conservation efforts.
